HOW TO COMMUNICATE CLEARLY: OUR TOP 10 TIPS
-
Focus on impact
Move, provoke, enlighten and entertain people. Hit them in the heart and head.
-
Keep it simple
Write and speak as clearly and simply as possible. Cut out the jargon.
-
Know your audience
Tailor your message to your audience. Assume ignorance.
-
Prioritise people
Focus on impact, not process; people, not institutions.
-
Be accurate
Check your facts and edit thoroughly.
-
Don’t confuse messages with news
Confuse your message with the news. It rarely is.
-
Don’t assume messages are stories
Think messages are stories. They rarely are.
-
Don’t assume prior knowledge
Assume others are as informed or interested about your issue as you are.
-
Back up your claims
Make claims without proof. Give hard evidence (data) and soft (stories).
-
Keep it engaging
Bore people. Keep it lively. Keep it short.
